The 11th BRICS Energy Ministers’ meeting, led by India in Gurugram, concluded with the adoption of a Joint Communique on Thursday. This document reflects the shared vision and agreement among BRICS countries on enhancing collaboration in energy security, sustainability, innovation, resilient infrastructure, and capacity building. India’s Chairship also saw the establishment of the BRICS Digital Centre of Excellence for Smart Grids and Energy Storage, aimed at fostering knowledge sharing and policy development among member nations.
In a significant move, the BRICS Energy Ministers emphasized the importance of respecting individual countries’ circumstances, development priorities, and energy strategies. They also approved the BRICS Guiding Principles on Smart Grids and Energy Storage, recognizing the vital role of modern, resilient power systems in ensuring reliable and affordable energy access while integrating renewable energy sources and new technologies.
During the Ministerial Meeting, Union Power Minister Manohar Lal underscored the fundamental role of energy in economic growth, social advancement, and human welfare. He stressed the need for developing nations to have the necessary resources and policy flexibility to pursue sustainable development while meeting the needs of their populations. Lal reaffirmed India’s commitment to building robust and inclusive energy systems under the principle of ‘Energy for All.’
The BRICS Energy Ministers acknowledged the progress made in finalizing the BRICS Joint Report on Hydrogen Value Chains 2026, which lays the groundwork for enhanced cooperation on hydrogen technologies, standards, and industrial applications. They also endorsed the updated Terms of Reference of the BRICS Energy Research Cooperation Platform, aimed at bolstering research, technical collaboration, and knowledge sharing among member countries.
