Swarup Biswas, the brother of ex-West Bengal Sports Minister Aroop Biswas, was arrested by Kolkata Police for his involvement in the vandalism case at Yuva Bharati Krirangan during Lionel Messi’s India Tour. He was remanded to 14 days’ police custody by a Kolkata court. The arrest followed a complaint from a female make-up artist associated with a Tollygunge-based organization.
Tollygunge, represented in the West Bengal Assembly by Swarup’s elder brother Aroop, saw Swarup facing charges under various sections including extortion and attempt to murder. A public prosecutor argued for further interrogation due to Swarup’s influence and familial ties. The accused allegedly extorted money from individuals promising them jobs in the film industry.
Swarup Biswas, who served as the president of a film technicians and workers federation, had long been accused of extortion within the organization. The court accepted the prosecutor’s arguments and granted 14 days’ police custody for Swarup. The incident has raised concerns about misuse of power and influence in the state.
