A Buddha Air turboprop passenger aircraft veered off the runway at Bhadrapur Airport in Nepal’s Jhapa district during a landing, triggering an emergency response. The airline confirmed the safety of all 51 passengers and four crew members on board. The incident occurred as the aircraft was operating a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur.
The aircraft faced difficulties during the landing process, leading to it skidding off the runway. Identified as Flight No. 9N-AMF, the flight involved an ATR 72-500 turboprop passenger aircraft, commonly used for short-haul regional operations in Nepal. Nepal Police verified the incident, mentioning the safe rescue of all individuals involved.
Buddha Air released an official statement expressing concern over the incident and appreciating the emergency responders. The airline acknowledged the efforts of Nepal Police, Nepali Army, Civil Aviation Authority, and its own staff in the rescue operations. Among the 51 passengers, those with minor injuries received primary treatment and safely returned home, with a commitment to cooperate fully in the investigation.
Emergency teams, including the Nepali Army, airport authorities, and Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) personnel, promptly responded to evacuate passengers and secure the aircraft. Although the runway excursion caused a temporary disruption to airport operations, services are being restored after safety inspections. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause, focusing on factors like weather conditions, runway surface, and aircraft performance.
The incident highlights aviation safety concerns in Nepal, especially regarding turboprop aircraft operating in challenging terrains and weather conditions. Notably, in a previous incident in January 2023, an ATR 72 aircraft operated by Yeti Airlines crashed in Pokhara, resulting in fatalities. Authorities underscore the different outcome in the Bhadrapur incident due to timely response and favorable circumstances, as investigations continue.
