The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to a project for constructing the third and fourth railway lines in the Ballari–Guntakal section, spanning Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. This initiative, with an investment of Rs 1,264 crore, aims to extend the Indian Railways network by about 46 kilometers and is scheduled for completion by 2028-29.
The project is set to improve connectivity to around 99 villages, accommodating a population of approximately seven lakhs. Additionally, it will enhance rail access to various popular tourist spots nationwide, including Ballari Fort and Sri Kumara Swamy Temple, as per an official statement released post the meeting.
This development is crucial for the transportation of various commodities like iron ore, dolomite, limestone, iron and steel, coal, and food grains. The capacity expansion efforts are expected to generate an extra freight traffic volume of 16.22 MTPA (Million Tonnes Per Annum), as per the statement.
Furthermore, by expanding the railway network, which is known for its environmental friendliness and energy efficiency, the project aims to aid in achieving climate targets and reducing the country’s logistics costs. It is projected to cut down India’s oil imports by approximately 1.32 crore liters and decrease carbon dioxide emissions by 6.67 crore kg, equivalent to planting 0.27 crore trees, the statement elaborated.
Aligned with the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, emphasizing enhanced multi-modal connectivity and logistic efficiency, this project is designed to offer seamless connectivity for the movement of people, goods, and services, enhancing operational efficiency and service reliability for Indian Railways.
The increased line capacity is expected to significantly boost mobility, leading to improved operational efficiency and service reliability for Indian Railways. This multi-tracking initiative aims to streamline operations, ease congestion, and align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a New India, fostering comprehensive development in the region to make its people self-reliant and enhance employment opportunities.
