The Calcutta High Court instructed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to seal all relevant areas at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital related to the horrific rape and murder of a junior woman doctor in August 2024. Specifically, the court emphasized sealing the seminar room where the victim’s body was discovered on August 9, 2024. Additionally, the CBI was directed to seal other suspected spots within the hospital, including the office and chamber of the then Principal, Sandip Ghosh, who is embroiled in both the rape and murder case and financial irregularities at the medical college.
During the hearing prompted by the victim’s family seeking permission to visit the crime scene, the division bench questioned the CBI about the status of the sealed seminar room. Upon confirmation that the seal was intact, concerns were raised about the office and chamber of Sandip Ghosh not being sealed. Subsequently, the court urged the CBI to seal all potential relevant areas within the hospital premises to ensure a thorough investigation. The next hearing on this matter is scheduled for May 21.
Following the recusal of the previous division bench from the case on May 12, citing the need for expedited proceedings, Chief Justice Sujoy Paul reassigned the case to a new division bench comprising Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh on May 15.
