A single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court has requested a detailed report from the office of the Director General of West Bengal Police regarding the number of cases and FIRs filed against Abhishek Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress general secretary and Lok Sabha member. Abhishek Banerjee’s counsel approached Justice Sougata Bhattacharya seeking clarity on the various cases and FIRs registered against him in different police stations.
Following a preliminary hearing, Justice Bhattacharya asked for a comprehensive report from the DGP’s office. The counsel for Abhishek Banerjee highlighted that due to his client’s political position, numerous cases had been lodged against him, alleging political vendetta. The counsel mentioned that while they were aware of eight FIRs against Banerjee, they sought clarity on the total number of ongoing cases.
The state government’s counsel refuted claims of political vendetta, asserting that the cases against the Diamond Harbour MP were based on specific complaints. Consequently, the court directed the state DGP’s office to furnish a detailed report on the cases and FIRs against the Trinamool Congress general secretary. Additionally, the court instructed the DGP’s office to provide a report outlining the subjects of the eight FIRs against the Diamond Harbour MP.
The next hearing on this matter is scheduled for July 22, by which time the DGP’s office is required to submit the report to the court.
