In the arid Kutch region of Gujarat, camel milk is now a vital source of income for many families reliant on animal husbandry. With innovative state government initiatives, such as the establishment of ‘Sarhad Dairy,’ camel herders are benefiting from a structured milk procurement system. This has enabled them to earn between Rs 50 and Rs 55 per liter of camel milk, significantly improving their livelihoods.

The introduction of ‘Sarhad Dairy’ has streamlined the process of selling camel milk, providing camel herders with a reliable market and ensuring timely payments. Previously facing challenges in selling their milk, camel herders now find it easier to sustain their livelihoods. Ashabhai Rabari, a camel herder, expressed gratitude for the government’s support and the assistance provided by the Milk Union, emphasizing the positive impact on their lives.

Devabhai Rabari highlighted the improved situation, mentioning that they now receive Rs 50 per liter of camel milk, which they supply to the dairy. The mobility of camel herders in search of fodder had previously made milk selling a cumbersome task. However, the intervention of Sarhad Dairy has simplified this process, marking a significant shift in the camel herders’ economic prospects.

Sarhad Dairy, a pioneering initiative in the country, not only procures camel milk but also processes it to create various products like milk, paneer, and ice cream. The dairy’s operations have witnessed a growth in milk procurement, with an average of 5,158 liters per day in 2025-26 compared to 4,754 liters in the previous year. The increased payments to camel herders, totaling nearly Rs 9.60 crore this year, reflect the positive impact of this initiative on their standard of living.

The consumption of camel milk, known for its medicinal properties and nutritional benefits, is in high demand due to its effectiveness in treating ailments like tuberculosis, diabetes, autism, and allergies. Dr. Alap Antani, a health expert, highlighted the potential benefits of camel milk in managing TB and reducing inflammation in the body. The establishment of dairies like Sarhad Dairy not only offers camel breeders a structured market but also extends financial assistance through loan facilities for camel purchases.
