Cameron Green’s inability to bowl for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 due to workload management by Cricket Australia has become a significant controversy. This issue has drawn comments from several former Indian players, including KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane, former opener Wasim Jaffer, and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar.
Green, who was signed for Rs 25.20 crore for his all-round skills, has not bowled in the tournament yet. This has raised concerns about team balance and utilization, especially after KKR conceded high runs in their matches against Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Sunil Gavaskar, speaking on Star Sports’ ‘Amul Cricket Live’, suggested that KKR should consider recruiting a specialist batter if Green is not going to bowl. He emphasized the need for a balanced team composition, particularly in the middle-order positions where KKR seems to be struggling.
Former player Wasim Jaffer also weighed in on the matter, expressing that it is unfair for KKR that Green is not bowling. He highlighted the importance of franchises having control over how players are utilized in private leagues, emphasizing that teams invest significantly in players with specific skill sets.
Captain Ajinkya Rahane had previously hinted that decisions regarding Green’s bowling were influenced by Cricket Australia, indicating that the team’s hands were tied in this matter. Cricket Australia later clarified that Green’s workload management was due to a lower back concern, with the franchise informed about this restriction beforehand.
Despite his limited role in matches, Green has been seen bowling in practice sessions, suggesting a potential return to full all-round duties as he progresses in his recovery. However, his performance with the bat has also been subpar in the current season, contributing to KKR’s losses and their current position at ninth in the points table.
