Cameron Norrie faced a tough challenge from 41-year-old Stan Wawrinka at the Barcelona Open but managed to secure a thrilling 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-4 victory after a late twist. Despite struggling to close out the match at 5-4 in the second set, Norrie eventually triumphed after a grueling two hours and 33 minutes at the ATP 500 event.
Norrie, currently ranked World No. 24, has advanced to the second round in Barcelona for the fifth time in his last six appearances. His next opponent will be American qualifier Ethan Quinn, who defeated Reilly Opelka 7-5, 7-6(7) to set up their first-ever meeting in the Lexus ATP Head2Head.
On the other hand, Wawrinka bid farewell to Barcelona, a city he has been associated with since 2004, marking over two decades of memories. Despite his early exit in this tournament, Wawrinka had notable successes in Barcelona, with semifinal appearances in 2006 and 2008, showcasing his talent in a city where he spent his youth training alongside his coach and brother in Castelldefels.
Wawrinka, a renowned right-hander, achieved significant milestones in his career, including winning three Grand Slam titles but never reaching the top spot in the world rankings, peaking at No. 3. Known for his ability to challenge the dominance of the “Big Four” in tennis, Wawrinka leaves a lasting legacy in the sport.
In a separate match, Tomas Martin Etcheverry advanced to the second round as Jack Draper retired after one hour and 45 minutes, following his return to competition since his previous match in Miami.
