The High Commissioner of Canada to India, Christopher Cooter, visited the residence of Naveen Patnaik, the Leader of Opposition in Odisha and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president, for a courtesy meeting. Discussions between the Canadian delegation and Patnaik focused on various issues concerning Odisha, emphasizing Canada’s potential role in the state’s trade, investment, and economic growth.
During a separate meeting, the Canadian High Commissioner, accompanied by his wife, also met Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, the Deputy Chief Minister of Odisha, at Lok Seva Bhawan. The discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation between India and Canada, with a specific emphasis on key sectors such as agri-export, technology collaboration, and bilateral trade, particularly in the context of Odisha.
Singh Deo highlighted Odisha’s significant role in mineral production, particularly its vast reserves of chromite and rare earth minerals. The discussions explored opportunities for foreign direct investment in mining and value-added industries, with a particular interest shown by the Canadian delegation in investing in Odisha’s automobile sector.
The meetings also delved into enhancing bilateral trade relations and fostering technology partnerships to drive sustainable industrial growth in Odisha. Singh Deo provided insights into Odisha’s heritage, agricultural landscape, and its approach to balancing tradition with modern development, welcoming global partnerships that bring technology, investment, and market access for sustainable and inclusive growth.
Odisha’s recognition as an ‘Achiever’ State in the Ease of Doing Business report by the World Bank was noted, attributing its appeal to global investors to policy stability, robust infrastructure, and a conducive industrial ecosystem. Moreover, plans to establish two Green Hydrogen Hubs in Odisha at Paradeep and Gopalpur were highlighted, positioning the state as a frontrunner in green technology and decarbonization efforts.
Singh Deo mentioned Canada’s interest in investing in projects related to clean energy and industrial cooperation, aligning with Odisha’s transition towards renewable energy sources and sustainable industrial practices.
