Cash amounting to over Rs 3.7 lakh was seized from three vehicles by the police and the Static Surveillance Team in West Bengal near the Assam border. Three individuals, including an Assam resident, have been detained for questioning in connection with this incident. The recovery of this cash before the state Assembly elections has caused a stir in the district.
Police personnel at a checkpoint intercepted a vehicle entering West Bengal from Assam and found Rs 57,700 in cash inside. The money was confiscated as the passenger, Birendra Saha, failed to provide valid documentation. Another vehicle, owned by Bikash Saha, was searched at a different checkpoint, leading to the discovery of Rs 1,14,300 in cash. Bikash Saha was also unable to provide proper documentation for the money and was detained.
On a subsequent day, police intercepted another vehicle entering West Bengal from Assam and recovered Rs 1,99,500 in cash. The passenger, Toton Bhowmik, was detained as he couldn’t produce valid documentation for the money. The police have seized the cash from all three vehicles as per Election Commission regulations. Investigations are ongoing to determine if the money was intended for illicit activities or to influence voters in the upcoming elections.
