The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) apprehended a superintendent and an inspector from the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) office in Giridih, Jharkhand, over bribery allegations. The arrest came after a complaint was lodged against the two officials for purportedly demanding a bribe of Rs 90,000 to resolve a GST-related issue. The accused officers were caught red-handed accepting Rs 50,000 as the first installment of the bribe during a trap set by the CBI.
The CGST superintendent and inspector allegedly threatened the complainant with blocking his GST number if he did not comply with their demands. Following the arrests, the CBI conducted searches at the suspects’ offices and residences to gather additional evidence. The arrested officials, identified as public servants in the CGST department in Giridih, are scheduled to appear before a court in Dhanbad.
The CBI has initiated legal proceedings under the Prevention of Corruption Act and is investigating the involvement of other individuals in the alleged corruption. This incident underscores the CBI’s efforts to combat corruption within tax administration departments, particularly in GST-related matters. The agency’s swift response to the complaint showcases its commitment to safeguarding taxpayers from illicit practices and ensuring transparency in the tax system.
