The CBI apprehended an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) from the Chandigarh Police for soliciting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from a vehicle owner involved in a road accident. Hitesh Kumar, serving as an ASI at Police Station Sector-39, Chandigarh, was taken into custody following a complaint received by the CBI.
A case was filed against the ASI by the CBI after the complainant accused him of demanding Rs 50,000 as a bribe to release his impounded vehicle after the accident. The complainant stated that ASI Hitesh Kumar assured him that if the bribe was paid, no criminal case would be filed against him in relation to the accident.
Upon negotiations, the ASI agreed to receive Rs 40,000 as a bribe from the complainant, as per a CBI statement. The investigative agency set a trap on June 6, capturing the ASI red-handed while accepting the illicit payment.
The CBI also conducted searches at the ASI’s residence to ascertain if his assets were disproportionate to his known income sources.
In a separate incident, the CBI booked a Railway clerk stationed at Kalka Railway Station for demanding a bribe of Rs 14,000 from the family of a retired employee seeking the release of his Rs 74,000 allowance. Rajneesh, the clerk, was arrested after a complaint was lodged by Himanshu Singh, the son of the retired Railway employee Sunder.
The complaint, verified by the CBI, ACB, Chandigarh, on June 1, substantiated the allegations against Rajneesh. During the verification process, a recorded conversation revealed that Rajneesh requested an illegal gratification of Rs 10,000 from the complainant to facilitate the release of Sunder’s arrears without reducing the bribe amount.
