The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) apprehended two Military Engineering Services officials in Pune’s Khadki for soliciting and receiving a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from a complainant. Sunil Nikam, Assistant Garrison Engineer, E/M-II, and Suresh Mhaske, Junior Engineer, E/M-II, were taken into custody following the incident. Searches at their residences and workplaces yielded documents and unaccounted cash amounting to Rs 1.88 lakh.
The CBI initiated a case on February 3 after a complaint alleged that the Assistant Garrison Engineer and Junior Engineer demanded an undue advantage of Rs 6 lakh. The complainant, representing a private company under MES contracts, reported that despite fulfilling contractual obligations and submitting completion certificates, payments were withheld to coerce a bribe payment. Subsequently, the accused officials agreed to receive Rs 2 lakh as the initial installment of the bribe.
During a planned operation on Thursday, the CBI apprehended the Junior Engineer red-handed while accepting the Rs 2 lakh bribe. The money was seized from his office. Additionally, the Assistant Garrison Engineer was arrested for his involvement in the illicit scheme, as confirmed by the CBI’s official statement. In a separate incident, the CBI detained Renu Saxena, a Proclaimed Offender, in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, for her role in a bank fraud case.
