The CBSE has mandated that Class IX students must study three languages starting from July 1. At least two of these languages should be native Indian languages, according to a recent circular. Students interested in a foreign language can opt for it as the third language if the other two are Indian languages or as an additional fourth language.
To address the lack of textbooks, Class IX students will temporarily use Class VI textbooks for the third language until dedicated textbooks are available. Additionally, the Board has decided not to conduct any Class X exams for the third language to reduce academic pressure.
The Board clarified that no student will be prevented from taking the Class X Board Examinations due to the third language. Assessments for the third language will be school-based and internal, with student performance reflected in the CBSE certificate. Schools are required to update their third language offerings for classes VI to IX by June 30, 2026, as per policy recommendations.
CBSE acknowledged the potential challenges schools may face in finding qualified teachers for native Indian languages during the transition. Schools are permitted to use various flexible arrangements, including inter-school resource sharing and hiring postgraduates. The Board also announced that Class 6 textbooks in 19 scheduled languages will be provided to schools before July 1, 2026.
