The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has fined coaching institute Vision IAS Rs 11 lakh for deceptive advertising regarding its students’ performance in the UPSC Civil Services Examination. This penalty marks the first instance of a fine for a repeated violation under consumer protection laws. Vision IAS, officially registered as AjayVision Education Private Limited, was found to have misled aspirants by overstating its impact on UPSC toppers in its ads.
The CCPA’s investigation revealed that Vision IAS concealed crucial information about the courses taken by successful candidates, creating a false impression that all toppers had enrolled in its costly foundation courses. Despite claiming significant success rates in its advertisements, the institute’s actual enrollment data showed a starkly different reality. Only a few successful candidates had opted for the institute’s foundation courses, while the majority had utilized limited services like test series and mock interviews.
The authority highlighted that Vision IAS selectively disclosed information about student enrollments, giving the misleading impression that all featured candidates had taken the premium course. This deliberate omission led to a false narrative of the institute’s role in candidates’ success. Considering the repeated nature of the violation, the CCPA imposed a substantial penalty to deter such misleading practices and protect consumers from deceptive advertising.
