The Central government has clarified that there are no plans to sanction an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Telangana, citing the presence of numerous existing higher education and management institutes in the state. Minister of State for Education, Sukanta Majumdar, informed Congress MP Mallu Ravi about the rejection of the request for an IIM in Hyderabad during a Lok Sabha session. Currently, there are 22 IIMs operating in 21 states, with Telangana among the states without an IIM.

The government establishes new institutions of national importance, including IIMs, based on factors like regional balance and resource availability, as per the Minister of State for Education. Telangana, as per the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2023-24, houses 2,070 higher education institutions, including 604 offering management courses such as universities, colleges, and standalone institutes. The state also boasts premier central government higher educational institutions like the University of Hyderabad, IIT Hyderabad, NIT Warangal, EFLU Hyderabad, and MANUU Hyderabad, along with the newly established Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University at Mulugu.

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the establishment of an IIM in Hyderabad, offering 200 acres of land for the purpose. Highlighting the presence of esteemed national educational institutions in the state, the Chief Minister emphasized that having an IIM would align with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
