The Centre has named Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty as the Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, succeeding Chief Justice Sujoy Paul. This decision, made under Article 223 of the Indian Constitution, entrusts Justice Chakraborty with the responsibilities of the Chief Justice role following Justice Paul’s retirement on June 20, 2026.
Article 223 of the Constitution grants the President the authority to designate a High Court judge to act as the Chief Justice in cases of vacancy or the incumbent’s inability to fulfill duties. Justice Chakraborty, born on November 27, 1966, hails from a legal background and has been practicing law at the Calcutta High Court for more than twenty years. His legal expertise primarily focuses on civil and constitutional matters, particularly in service and education laws, with a specialization in constitutional law.
Having served as an Additional Judge at the Calcutta High Court since October 30, 2013, Justice Chakraborty was later appointed as a permanent judge on March 14, 2016. The official notification of his appointment as Acting Chief Justice comes a day before the current Chief Justice, Sujoy Paul, retires due to reaching the age of superannuation.
