India’s cybersecurity agency, CERT-In, has issued a high-severity alert regarding the impact of advanced artificial intelligence on cyber threats. The agency warns that the increasing sophistication of AI systems is empowering attackers to conduct faster and more extensive cyberattacks. Industry concerns over the disruptive potential of cutting-edge AI models have been growing, with AI tools now capable of independently identifying software vulnerabilities and executing complex cyberattacks with minimal human intervention.

The advisory emphasizes that these AI-driven systems can exploit vulnerabilities across various platforms, enabling attackers to breach enterprise networks comprehensively. By automating different stages of cyberattacks, these tools make it easier for cybercriminals to target organizations, particularly micro, small, and medium enterprises with limited cybersecurity resources. CERT-In recommends enhancing defenses by implementing advanced threat detection systems, continuous network monitoring, and maintaining detailed system activity logs for forensic analysis.

Furthermore, the agency stresses the importance of prompt patch management and disclosure practices to mitigate the risks posed by rapidly evolving AI-driven threats. Secure coding standards and regular security audits are also advised, along with the adoption of AI-aware security frameworks to anticipate malicious use of machine learning technologies. CERT-In highlights the critical role of log preservation in responding to sophisticated attacks, as detailed records can aid in reconstructing intrusion paths and minimizing damage.
