The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has initiated a citywide project to reconstruct old and damaged footpaths, with a focus on enhancing pedestrian safety and street quality. The first phase, costing Rs 70.37 crore out of the total Rs 200 crore allocated, will see the rebuilding of pavements in various neighborhoods. This initiative, managed by the GCC’s Special Projects Department, involves nine infrastructure packages for the reconstruction.
The initial phase will cover Zones 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 13, encompassing residential areas, internal roads, and key commercial zones across different parts of Chennai. Notable areas slated for improvement include Anna Nagar, MMDA Colony, Besant Nagar, Indira Nagar, Kathipara, and Sastri Nagar. The selection of these stretches was based on evaluations conducted by zonal offices and detailed on-site assessments of the existing footpaths.
Unlike previous temporary fixes, this program emphasizes complete reconstruction to ensure longevity and consistency. The process includes removing damaged footpaths, laying new base layers, and constructing fresh concrete walkways. Additionally, the installation of kerbs and edge restraints aims to enhance structural stability and deter encroachments. Pedestrian-friendly elements like bollards will also be integrated to boost safety and protect walkers from vehicular intrusion.
The refurbished footpaths are expected to offer a safer and more convenient walking experience, especially for seniors, children, and individuals with disabilities. The project is set to be finalized within six months from the handover date at each site. A senior GCC official mentioned plans for similar initiatives in other parts of the city, with additional areas to be covered gradually based on zonal feedback and inspections.
With a rising emphasis on walkability and sustainable urban transport, the revamped footpaths are anticipated to promote walking for short distances, enhancing Chennai’s urban environment and civic amenities.
