Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is set to inaugurate Chennai’s new air-conditioned double-decker sightseeing bus service on Monday. The initiative, led by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC), aims to provide tourists with a comprehensive tour of the city’s heritage and administrative landmarks. The double-decker bus, supported by the Tamil diaspora in the United States and a private company, will enhance organized urban sightseeing in the state capital.
The flag-off ceremony will occur at the Nandambakkam Trade Centre, marking the official commencement of the service for tourists and city visitors. TTDC has secured the necessary operational permits and finalized the initial phase of the route. The sightseeing tour will kick off at the TTDC office on Wallajah Road, a central location near various historic sites, and will cover significant city landmarks such as the Munro Statue, Madras High Court complex, Reserve Bank of India building, Secretariat, Napier Bridge, and Ezhilagam before concluding at Foreshore Estate along the Marina waterfront.
The service is designed as a short-duration city tour, catering primarily to tourists with limited time and first-time visitors seeking a broad overview of Chennai. The elevated seating arrangement on the double-decker bus promises panoramic views of heritage structures, main roads, and the coastline, enhancing the visual experience for passengers. The tourism department plans to gather passenger feedback during the initial phase to expand the service based on demand and operational feasibility in the future.
The launch aligns with ongoing urban and heritage development projects along Kamarajar Salai by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority and the Greater Chennai Corporation. Tourism stakeholders anticipate that the sightseeing bus will complement these initiatives by helping visitors better understand the city’s architectural heritage and evolving public spaces. The state government’s objective is to establish Chennai as a more accessible and engaging destination for structured city tourism.
