The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is planning to establish approximately 200 temporary container-based shelters in the city. These shelters aim to provide free accommodation for migrant workers and homeless families. The initiative addresses the rising need for safe and accessible shelter for vulnerable groups.
The project will involve creating interim housing facilities across Chennai, focusing on areas with high migrant labor and homeless populations. Each shelter, developed using modified container units, will offer essential facilities like sleeping spaces, toilets, electricity, and water access to ensure basic living standards.
The shelters are intended to provide dignified temporary accommodation for those currently living in unsafe conditions such as pavements, under bridges, and in makeshift settlements. They will primarily cater to migrant workers in sectors like construction, sanitation, logistics, and informal services, along with homeless families lacking stable housing.
A senior GCC official highlighted that the initiative aims to provide a more organized and humane solution for the city’s migrant workforce. The shelters’ design and layout will be based on assessments of different communities and locations to ensure suitability for occupants and local conditions.
The GCC presently operates 49 shelters for the homeless in Chennai, including regular and special shelters attached to government hospitals. In addition to expanding shelter numbers, the corporation plans to upgrade existing facilities and enhance living conditions. The new shelters are expected to offer three meals a day, enhancing food security along with accommodation.
This initiative forms part of the GCC’s broader efforts to bolster urban welfare infrastructure and offer humane living conditions to vulnerable residents in Chennai.
