Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar visited Uttarkashi to assess the ongoing Special Intensive Revision activities in the border district of Uttarakhand. Upon arrival, he was welcomed by Uttarakhand Chief Electoral Officer Dr. B.V.R.C. Purushottam. During the visit, Kumar inspected a polling booth in Harsil and interacted with the Booth Level Officer, discussing aspects related to the revision of electoral rolls.
CEC Kumar then proceeded to Gangotri Dham for special prayers and a review meeting with officials on the progress of the SIR process in the region. At the Jhala helipad, he was greeted by administrative officials and presented with a sapling as a gesture of welcome. The visit highlighted the strategic importance of the border region, with heightened activity and alertness observed among administrative and security agencies.
The Election Commission’s active involvement in remote and border areas is seen as crucial for strengthening the democratic framework. The visit aims to review facilities at polling stations, communication systems, security arrangements, and challenges in conducting elections in remote areas. As part of the SIR drive, CEC Kumar will gather feedback on voter list accuracy, transparency, and measures to enhance the electoral process.
The Election Commission of India had initiated the SIR of electoral rolls across 16 states and three Union Territories to enhance the accuracy and credibility of voter lists nationwide. This exercise is designed to strengthen the electoral process and ensure transparent voter registration procedures.
