Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma marked the 50th anniversary of the Emergency by announcing a significant rise in the monthly pension for Loktantra Senanis from Rs 5,000 to Rs 25,000. This increase was revealed during a state-level event held to honor those who resisted the Emergency and defended democratic principles. The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of the Loktantra Senanis’ contribution in safeguarding democracy during that challenging period.

At the felicitation ceremony for Loktantra Senanis, Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma highlighted the direct assault the Emergency posed on the Constitution and democracy. He expressed gratitude towards those who fought to protect democratic values and constitutional rights during that time. The Chief Minister also stressed the state government’s commitment to ensuring the dignity, welfare, and social security of Loktantra Senanis.

During the event, CM Sharma announced a substantial increase in financial assistance for Loktantra Senanis. He disclosed that the monthly pension under the Loktantra Senani Samman Nidhi scheme would now be Rs 25,000, up from Rs 5,000, while monthly medical aid would rise to Rs 5,000 from Rs 1,000. Additionally, he reiterated the government’s dedication to preserving the spirit of democracy and the Constitution as a collective responsibility.

Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma underscored the need to educate the younger generation about the events of the Emergency and the sacrifices made by those who fought to protect democratic institutions. He mentioned that thousands of individuals, including political leaders, social activists, journalists, and volunteers, faced imprisonment and curtailment of fundamental rights during the Emergency. Sharma also acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts in strengthening democratic institutions and constitutional values.
