In a response to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav revealed that 61,112 girls went missing in the state from 2021 to 2025. Out of these cases, 3,241 girls are still unaccounted for based on the latest government data.
The Chief Minister emphasized that all instances of missing minor girls are categorized as “kidnapped” as per Supreme Court orders. This classification ensures that thorough police investigations are conducted promptly and without any delays.
The data presented in the Assembly indicated a concerning rise in missing girl cases each year, with figures escalating from 9,407 in 2021 to a peak of 13,146 in 2025. The Chief Minister also disclosed that 61,498 girls were successfully located and rescued during this period, including cases from previous years.
Additionally, the government highlighted that there were 3,627 pending cases at the beginning of 2021, underscoring the backlog that authorities had to manage alongside new reports. The reply further mentioned the registration of 6,309 new missing girl cases in the initial five months of 2026, indicating ongoing challenges.
The Chief Minister informed the Assembly about the implementation of ‘Operation Muskaan’ by the Madhya Pradesh government to combat the abduction and trafficking of girls in the state. Notably, ‘Operation Srijan’ and ‘Operation Abhimanyu’ are specific initiatives targeting girls and boys, respectively, with regular review meetings to oversee progress and ensure swift recoveries. The state has also established an Anti-Human Trafficking Bureau at the state level and Anti-Human Trafficking Units in all 52 women’s police stations across Madhya Pradesh.
