Chinese components such as sensors, voltage converters, and semiconductors have been detected in Iranian drones, sparking worries about the transfer of sanctioned dual-use technology. Reports suggest that China is aiding Iran with intelligence on US military presence in the Gulf and supplying surveillance systems to bolster Tehran’s weapons capabilities. However, Beijing’s options are constrained by the need to maintain friendly relations with Gulf nations and appease US President Donald Trump ahead of a scheduled summit with President Xi Jinping.

US intelligence reports indicate that China is gearing up to provide Iran with new air defense systems in the near future. This move comes amidst a ceasefire period, during which Iran may be seeking to replenish certain weapons systems with the assistance of foreign allies. Beijing’s involvement in Iran is crucial for countering US influence in the Middle East, with reports suggesting that China is exploring alternative routes through third countries to conceal the origin of weapon shipments.

Among the systems reportedly earmarked for transfer to Iran are shoulder-fired surface-to-air missile systems known as MANPADs, capable of posing a threat to low-flying US military aircraft. President Trump has expressed concerns over the possibility of China supplying such missiles to Iran, emphasizing potential repercussions. Additionally, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran has reportedly gained access to a network of commercial ground stations operated by a Beijing-based satellite services provider, enabling surveillance activities across the Middle East.

The satellite imagery captured by this network has revealed Iranian missile strike targets, including key locations in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Iraq. Western intelligence assessments suggest that Chinese assistance in providing satellite access to Iran likely involves tacit approval from relevant authorities, indicating a level of covert cooperation. The intricate dynamics of China’s involvement in Iran’s military capabilities underscore the delicate balance Beijing must maintain between various geopolitical interests.
