The Chinese Consulate General in Kolkata has cautioned Chinese nationals to avoid mistakenly entering Indian territory without proper travel documents. Emphasizing the necessity of obtaining an Indian visa before entering India, the consulate highlighted the porous Nepal-India border, which poses risks of inadvertent crossings, especially for Chinese travelers in Nepal’s border regions. Chinese nationals without valid Indian visas may face detention by Indian border forces or police, the consulate stated.
The consulate also alerted that India imposes strict penalties on illegal entrants, irrespective of the intent behind the entry. Those caught entering illegally could be detained and handed over to legal authorities, potentially facing imprisonment ranging from two to eight years, hefty fines, and challenges in securing bail. Chinese nationals in Nepal were urged to take this matter seriously, avoid border areas with India, and refrain from risky behaviors or local guidance to prevent severe repercussions and personal losses.
Furthermore, the consulate reminded Chinese nationals that even with a valid Indian visa, they must seek written permission from Indian authorities before visiting restricted zones. It stressed the importance of departing India before visa expiration to avoid legal liabilities for overstaying. This advisory comes in the wake of the recent arrest of a Chinese national, Zhou Huan, near the India-Nepal border in Bihar’s Araria district for attempting to enter India without valid travel documents, as confirmed by Janardan Mishra, Commandant of the SSB 56 Battalion.
