The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal Police has launched an investigation into a complaint by activist Rajiv Sarkar, who expressed concerns about his safety due to alleged threats from Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Sarkar, the initial complainant in a hate speech case involving Banerjee, fears for his life following his previous complaint against the politician. Banerjee, a Lok Sabha member, has faced accusations of inciting violence and making threats against Union Home Minister Amit Shah during a campaign rally.
Following Sarkar’s complaint at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police station, Banerjee was questioned twice by CID officials and had to provide voice samples at Bidhannagar Court. Sarkar, citing a recent incident where Banerjee’s party office was demolished, expressed concerns that he may be targeted for his actions. Referring to a Facebook Live video by Trinamool Congress legislator Madan Mitra, Sarkar highlighted allegations made against Banerjee, further emphasizing his apprehensions.
In response to the situation, Banerjee has issued a Rs 10 crore defamation notice to Mitra over the allegations made on social media. Sarkar’s fears of being framed or harmed stem from the perceived threats and actions of Banerjee, as well as the statements made by political figures like Mitra. The investigation into the complaint aims to address the concerns raised by Sarkar regarding his safety and the alleged risks associated with his involvement in the hate speech case.
