The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal Police has assumed control of the investigation into the brutal killing of Chandranath Rath, a close aide of Suvendu Adhikari. Rath was fatally shot by a motorcycle rider while returning home from a BJP event. The assailant, wearing a helmet, blocked Rath’s vehicle at Doharia crossing in North 24 Parganas district and fired at close range, killing Rath instantly and injuring his driver, Buddhadeb Bera.
The state director general of police, Siddh Nath Gupta, has confirmed that the number plates on the vehicles used in the crime were fake. Recovered from the scene were used cartridges and bullets, although specific details are being withheld for investigative purposes. CID investigators are currently at the crime scene, examining CCTV footage from the area and nearby residential complexes.
Suvendu Adhikari has been informed by the police that significant leads have been obtained from the CCTV recordings. The CID has cordoned off the area where the incident occurred and deployed central forces, leading to restrictions on both vehicular and pedestrian movement. A forensic team from Barasat Medical College & Hospital will conduct Rath’s autopsy, with the state police’s forensic team having already collected evidence from the crime scene.
