The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) discovered suspected cannabis in the luggage of a passenger bound for Delhi at Imphal’s Bir Tikendrajit International Airport. The security personnel found around 420 grams of the contraband substance during a routine baggage screening. Following protocol, the authorities opened the baggage in the presence of CISF, Airport Police, and Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials.
The packet containing the suspected cannabis was concealed inside the luggage, leading to the interception of the passenger before boarding the flight to Delhi. The passenger, along with the contraband, was handed over to the Singjamei Police Station for further investigation and legal action. CISF emphasized its dedication to ensuring secure civil aviation through stringent screening measures and constant vigilance against illegal activities.
Manipur and Mizoram have become significant drug trafficking routes in Northeast India due to their porous international borders with Myanmar. These borders are exploited by transnational drug syndicates for smuggling narcotics into India. The region faces challenges in curbing illegal cross-border activities, especially in districts sharing unfenced borders with Myanmar.
During the NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting in New Delhi, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh highlighted security challenges stemming from the conflict in Myanmar. Singh stressed the importance of robust border management, improved surveillance, and coordinated efforts to combat drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and human trafficking along the international border. The Ministry of Home Affairs has initiated fencing along the India-Myanmar border to prevent illegal arms and drug smuggling, with ongoing construction on additional stretches.
Singh reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to collaborating with central agencies and security forces to enhance anti-drug operations. The focus remains on combating narcotics trafficking and strengthening Manipur’s position in the fight against drug-related crimes in the region.
