A civic volunteer in Howrah has been arrested for allegedly molesting a teenage girl who later died by suicide. The incident occurred during a Kali Puja event in Amta, where the accused volunteer was present. The girl, feeling humiliated, informed her mother about the molestation upon returning home.
The victim’s family found her hanging inside their house the next morning. The news of her death led to tension in the area, prompting protests and demands for the volunteer’s immediate arrest. Following a written complaint by the family, the accused was arrested under the POCSO Act and for abetment to suicide.
Criticism towards civic volunteers in the state has been ongoing due to recruitment lapses and misconduct. To address such issues, the state police initiated training programs for civic volunteers, emphasizing legal awareness and proper conduct.
