Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis dismissed rumors of a clandestine late-night meeting with Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray at his official residence. The clarification comes amidst escalating political tensions ahead of the Maharashtra Legislative Council elections. Speculation arose following a social media post alleging Thackeray’s visit to the Chief Minister’s residence for discussions on ensuring an unopposed election to thwart “horse-trading.”
CM Fadnavis refuted the claims, asserting that no such meeting occurred and stressing transparency between the two leaders. He emphasized that if they were to meet, it would be done openly without secrecy. The Chief Minister criticized those spreading the false news, labeling them as “liars” and warning of legal action against deliberate spreaders of misinformation.
Amid the political commotion surrounding the upcoming Maharashtra Legislative Council elections on May 12, Uddhav Thackeray’s term ending on May 13 has prompted calls for his re-election. Nationalist Congress Party leader Supriya Sule publicly urged Thackeray to contest, citing his experience and leadership as beneficial to the state. While allies advocate for Thackeray’s candidacy, the ruling Mahayuti alliance asserts that any political discussions would be transparent and not secretive.
State Congress leaders have also expressed support for Uddhav Thackeray’s nomination, yet Thackeray has not disclosed his decision on seeking re-election or nominating another candidate.
