The death toll from a coal mine explosion in Mynsyngat, Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district, has reached 25. Search and rescue efforts are still underway as officials confirmed the recovery of four more bodies from the mine. Additionally, one injured individual receiving treatment at NEIGRIHMS, Shillong, passed away, along with two others who succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at different hospitals.
Officials have identified 17 of the deceased and handed over their bodies to their families after completing legal formalities. Police have initiated legal action by filing an FIR at Khliehriat Police Station under relevant sections of the law. Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident and remanded to police custody for further investigation.
Efforts are being made to identify and apprehend others involved in the illegal mining operation. Search, investigation, and legal proceedings are ongoing, with authorities maintaining vigilance in the area. This tragic incident underscores the persistent dangers of illegal coal mining in the district, despite existing bans.
