Coal production has commenced at the Urtan and Dhirauli coal mines in Madhya Pradesh, marking a significant step towards enhancing domestic coal availability. The Urtan Coal Mine, situated in the Anuppur district, has been allocated to M/s JMS Mining Private Limited and started production on May 15. This mine is the first underground coal mine to begin production under the commercial coal auction regime, a notable achievement in transforming the coal sector for energy security.
In another development, coal production has also started at the Dhirauli Coal Mine in the Singrauli district. Allocated to M/s Mahan Energen Limited, this mine began production on May 17, 2026, aiming to bolster coal supply from the resource-rich Singrauli region. These production milestones highlight the impact of government reforms and streamlined procedures in enhancing operational efficiency, promoting ease of doing business, and fostering self-reliance in the energy sector.
The increased coal production from these mines is expected to address the growing domestic coal demand, reduce reliance on imports, and support sustained economic growth. Over the past decade, India has witnessed a 70% growth in coal production, emphasizing transparency, efficiency, and sustainability. State governments have significantly benefited, receiving nearly Rs 2.5 lakh crore in auction premiums and royalties.
The government’s focus on underground mining, with its environmental advantages such as lower land disturbance and reduced emissions, is evident. A clear roadmap aiming to achieve 100 million tonnes by 2029–30 is being implemented. Additionally, the Ministry is expediting First Mile Connectivity projects to ensure that 90% of coal is loaded using mechanized and eco-friendly systems like conveyor belts, Silo and Rapid Loading Systems, and water sprinklers.
