The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has called on the Delhi Police to halt what it terms as the “unlawful detaining and intimidation” of individuals trying to access Jantar Mantar. The satirical movement criticized the police for allegedly creating an environment of “fear and siege” around the protest site and impeding the supply of food and water to protesters. The CJP expressed strong condemnation of the Delhi Police’s actions regarding the ongoing protest over examination paper leaks and recruitment irregularities.
For over a month, a peaceful demonstration has been ongoing at Jantar Mantar, with students, parents, teachers, and citizens demanding accountability on various issues. The CJP accused the Delhi Police of adopting increasingly restrictive measures against those involved in or supporting the protest. The organization claimed that individuals seeking to join the protest were being detained, and essential supplies meant for protesters were being blocked. Referring to Jantar Mantar as a space for peaceful dissent, the CJP emphasized that protesters were exercising their constitutional rights.
The CJP highlighted that peaceful protest is a fundamental aspect of constitutional democracy and criticized the police for allegedly choosing intimidation over regulation. The organization urged the Delhi Police Commissioner to instruct officers to refrain from detaining, intimidating, or obstructing citizens from reaching Jantar Mantar. It also called for the unimpeded entry of essential items for peaceful protesters and emphasized the importance of upholding citizens’ right to assemble and express dissent.
