Coco Gauff fought back to defeat Alycia Parks in three sets at the Miami Open, securing a spot in the round of 16. Despite early challenges, Gauff displayed dominance in the match, saving multiple break points. This victory marks Gauff’s fourth appearance in the last 16 in Miami as she pursues her first quarterfinal at the WTA 1000 event.
Gauff initially took a 2-0 lead with an early break, but Parks rallied to claim the first set 6-2 by winning six consecutive games. However, Gauff then turned the tide, winning 12 of the next 13 games to clinch a 2-6, 6-0, 6-1 triumph in 1 hour and 50 minutes, as reported by WTA.
After the match, Gauff reflected on the challenge, stating, “It was really difficult. She was playing really well and she’s one of those people who’s hit or miss sometimes.” Gauff acknowledged the need to balance aggression and strategy in her gameplay, making crucial adjustments that led to her victory.
With this win, Gauff notched her 11th comeback victory at the WTA level since the beginning of the 2025 season, a record shared with Madison Keys and Anastasia Potapova. Among players born since 2000, Gauff’s 104 wins at WTA 1000 events rank second, trailing only Iga Swiatek’s 130 wins. Gauff is now set to face Sorana Cirstea in her quest for a quarterfinal berth at the WTA 1000 event.
