The expansion of Coimbatore International Airport in Tamil Nadu is advancing as the district administration has finished a detailed land survey. This survey aims to facilitate the construction of a 10.5-metre-wide access road requested by local residents and farmers. The survey report and revised land map have been submitted to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for approval.

The upgraded Coimbatore Airport is considered a crucial infrastructure project for western Tamil Nadu. It is anticipated to enhance the region’s industrial, commercial, and international connectivity. The plan includes extending the existing 9,000-foot runway to 12,000 feet to accommodate wide-body aircraft like the Boeing 777 and Airbus A350.

The longer runway will enable direct international passenger services and long-haul cargo operations from Coimbatore. This development is expected to reduce reliance on other airports and significantly benefit exports, manufacturing, and investments in the region. The airport expansion project, which has already received substantial funding, is in the process of acquiring the remaining land needed to complete the initiative.

Construction of the airport’s perimeter wall had faced opposition from local residents and farmers due to concerns about road access. They demanded a 10.5-metre-wide road alongside the boundary wall to ensure smooth traffic flow. Following discussions with the District Collector, a revised road alignment has been finalized after an extensive land survey.

The completion of the survey marks a significant step towards resuming the construction of the airport boundary wall. Once the Airports Authority of India approves the revised plans, work on the boundary wall is expected to restart, signaling progress in the long-awaited Coimbatore Airport expansion project.
