The Coimbatore rural district police achieved significant success in combating drug peddling and illegal liquor activities in 2025. This success was largely attributed to the implementation of the ‘Smart Khakis’ scheme, which involved continuous patrolling and enhanced visible policing in rural areas. Throughout the year, a total of 670 kg of narcotics were confiscated in 464 drug-related cases, leading to the arrest of 556 individuals.
District Superintendent of Police K Karthikeyan hailed these accomplishments as a major milestone and one of the most effective anti-narcotics campaigns conducted in recent years. In 2025, various preventive and enforcement measures were introduced to bolster law and order in the district. The launch of the ‘Smart Khakis’ initiative, which involved round-the-clock patrolling by police personnel on a rotational basis, was a key highlight of the year.
The ‘Smart Khakis’ scheme focused on targeted patrols in isolated villages, vulnerable areas, and crime hotspots within rural Coimbatore. This strategic approach significantly contributed to crime prevention and swift intervention. The continuous presence of law enforcement personnel acted as a deterrent, enabling the early detection of suspicious activities and the prevention of criminal offenses.
Superintendent Karthikeyan emphasized that the 52% increase in narcotic seizures in 2025 was a result of rigorous enforcement, intelligence-driven operations, and specialized crackdowns by the rural police. He clarified that the rise in seizures signified enhanced detection and policing efforts rather than a surge in drug-related incidents. Additionally, the Coimbatore rural police intensified their crackdown on the illicit sale and production of alcohol during the year.
