Intense cold weather has enveloped Jammu and Kashmir, with temperatures falling below freezing across the Valley. Srinagar saw a low of minus 1.5 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg recorded minus 6.5 and Pahalgam minus 5.2. In Jammu city, the temperature dropped to 7.9 degrees Celsius, with Katra at 6.6, Batote at 4.2, Banihal at 2.7, and Bhaderwah at minus 1.5. Water sources in various cities froze due to the severe cold, prompting cardiologists to warn individuals, especially those with heart conditions, against venturing out in the mornings. They advised wearing layers of warm clothing to combat the increased risk of heart attacks during the winter months in Kashmir. Despite the ongoing harsh winter period known as ‘Chillai Kalan,’ which began on December 21, heavy snowfall has not yet occurred in the Valley. The weather forecast indicates continued cold, cloudy, and dry conditions until January 20. If substantial snowfall does not materialize by the end of Chillai Kalan on January 30, the upcoming summer months could pose significant challenges due to a 39% rain deficit this winter in Jammu and Kashmir.
