Colonel Dibya Shankar Bhattacharya, a respected retired Army officer and prominent social figure from Assam, was recently presented with the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Commendation Card and Medal by Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi. The award ceremony took place in Tezpur, where General Dwivedi praised Col. Bhattacharya for his exceptional service to the nation, emphasizing his unwavering dedication, integrity, and professional excellence even post-retirement.
Col. Bhattacharya, who served in the Indian Army for over 33 years, was commended for his significant contributions to national development and public welfare, setting a high standard for both veterans and civilians. Notably, he was the first individual from Assam to achieve All India Rank-1 in the UPSC National Defence Academy (NDA) examination.
Throughout his distinguished military tenure, Col. Bhattacharya actively participated in crucial operations along the Pakistan and China borders, including missions like Operation Rakshak and Operation Parakram. His exceptional leadership skills were further recognized during his deputation as a Director in the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
Post his retirement, Col. Bhattacharya continues to serve the public actively. He practices law at the Gauhati High Court and holds a teaching position at Arya Vidyapeeth College. Additionally, he established the Dibya Shankar Foundation, aimed at guiding and supporting young individuals from Assam and the Northeast who aspire to join the armed forces.
Recently honored with the Sarvottam Sadhna Award 2026 for his societal contributions, Col. Bhattacharya’s latest recognition from the Army Chief symbolizes his lifelong commitment to the nation, armed forces, and the people of Assam, serving as an inspiration for future generations to excel in national service.
