Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently met with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, to discuss finalizing a balanced and mutually beneficial trade agreement. Goyal emphasized the strong economic partnership between India and the United States and the need for a fair trade deal in line with the Joint Statement of February 7, 2026.
During the discussions, both sides expressed commitment to deepening economic ties and creating new growth opportunities. The ongoing negotiations aim to solidify a bilateral trade agreement that could enhance economic cooperation between the two countries and open up new avenues for collaboration.
US Ambassador Gor welcomed USTR Greer to India for crucial trade talks with Minister Goyal. The visit is part of the efforts to advance the proposed bilateral trade agreement, with both countries working towards a comprehensive trade pact that benefits both economies. The engagement at the ministerial level follows earlier talks to pave the way for a broader trade arrangement.
Goyal is optimistic about resolving outstanding issues and reaching an initial agreement by the middle of next month. The negotiations are particularly significant as the temporary tariff imposed by the US on its trading partners is set to expire on July 24, adding urgency to the discussions.
