The Congress party revealed its initial list of 87 candidates for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. This announcement followed the party’s alliance declaration with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) led by Prakash Ambedkar. The candidate list covers crucial areas in Mumbai, including Colaba, Mumbadevi, Malabar Hill, and others.
The Mumbai unit President, Varsha Gaikwad, emphasized the party’s commitment to fighting for the rights of all Mumbaikars. Gaikwad expressed confidence in the party’s preparedness and determination for the upcoming elections. The Congress aims to champion the cause of the common Mumbaikar and uphold democratic principles alongside its allies.
Among the 87 candidates, the Congress party has nominated 36 women from diverse categories like Open, SC, and OBC. Notably, Nazia Ashfaque Siddiqui will contest against Geeta Gawli, daughter of Arun Gawli, from Ward No. 212 (Byculla). Geeta Gawli is running on the Akhil Bharatiya Sena ticket in the civic polls.
The Congress party initially planned to contest independently but later formed an alliance with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi. This decision came after distancing from aligning with the Shiv Sena led by Uddhav Thackeray, post its collaboration with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena led by Raj Thackeray. State Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal highlighted the shared commitment of Congress and VBA in upholding constitutional values. He recalled their successful collaboration pre-1999 and expressed optimism about their alliance for the Mumbai elections.
