After the Supreme Court granted Congress leader Pawan Khera anticipatory bail, he expressed gratitude, highlighting the Constitution’s role in supporting those opposing oppressive governance. The bail was approved in connection with alleged remarks against Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Khera, speaking at the Delhi airport, emphasized the Constitution’s protection for individuals facing challenges from the government. The Supreme Court, overturning the Gauhati High Court’s decision, stressed the importance of individual liberty under Article 21 of the Constitution while allowing Khera’s appeal for anticipatory bail.
The top court’s directive included conditions for Khera’s bail, requiring his cooperation with the investigation and adherence to specified terms. The Congress party welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision, emphasizing the significance of personal liberty and the need for arrests to be the last resort, especially in cases related to alleged defamation.
Congress communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh and party MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi highlighted the importance of the legal principle that arrests should be justified by specific risks. Singhvi, also Khera’s counsel, emphasized that arrests should not be used for humiliation or political motives. The Congress leaders viewed the court’s decision as a reaffirmation of faith in the judiciary and justice system in the country.
