The Congress-led UDF government has suspended Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) M.R. Ajith Kumar for allegedly trying to obstruct the investigation into the controversial Alappuzha “rescue operation” case. This action follows the recommendation of Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala, which was accepted by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan after reviewing the Special Investigation Team (SIT) report and the Home Secretary’s assessment.
The government has also initiated departmental proceedings against three Deputy Superintendents of Police (DySPs) and two Grade Sub-Inspectors (SIs) associated with Ajith Kumar. The SIT, responsible for probing the alleged cover-up, determined that Ajith Kumar had intervened to shield officials linked to the assault on KSU and Youth Congress workers during the Nava Kerala Yatra under the previous government.
Efforts were allegedly made to tamper with the case diary and manipulate official records to protect those involved, as per the SIT findings. The decision to suspend Ajith Kumar, a senior IPS officer, came after detailed consultations between the Chief Minister, Home Minister, and State Police Chief Ravada A. Chandrasekhar. This move has halted Ajith Kumar’s chances of immediate promotion to the rank of Director General of Police (DGP).
