An MP-MLA court in New Delhi found sitting Congress MLA Rajendra Bharti guilty in a case dating back over 28 years involving a Cooperative Rural Development Bank in Madhya Pradesh’s Datia district. Bharti, representing the Datia Assembly seat, was sent to jail immediately after the conviction, with the sentencing scheduled for Thursday.

Bharti, accused of financial misconduct during his tenure as the Chairman of the Cooperative Rural Development Bank in Datia, was convicted under Section 420 (cheating) of the IPC. The court’s decision led to Bharti being directed to Tihar Jail without delay.

The case, originating in 1998 when Bharti’s mother deposited Rs 10 lakh in a fixed deposit at the bank, saw Bharti allegedly altering records to extend the FD’s tenure and benefit from a 13.50% interest rate for 15 years. Charges under various sections of the IPC were framed against Bharti and another individual, with the court’s judgment now confirming Bharti’s conviction.
