The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has named senior Assam Congress MLA Wazed Ali Choudhury as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) in the Assam Assembly. Joy Prakash Das has been appointed as the Deputy Leader of the party in the House. These appointments were made official through a press release issued by AICC General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal from New Delhi.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge approved the proposal for Choudhury and Das to lead the Congress Legislature Party in Assam with immediate effect. Choudhury, a respected figure in Assam politics, will guide the party in the Assembly as the state gears up for the 2026 elections. He has been a vocal advocate on issues related to minorities, development, and governance in the state.
Joy Prakash Das, the newly appointed Deputy Leader, is known for his influence within the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee. He has actively participated in organizational and legislative affairs. These appointments are viewed as part of the Congress party’s strategy to bolster its legislative leadership and counter the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led alliance in Assam.
The Congress, currently the primary opposition in the Assam Assembly, is working on strengthening its position through organizational restructuring and outreach programs. The appointments of Choudhury and Das are expected to enhance coordination between the legislative wing and the state leadership as the party readies itself for future political challenges in Assam.
