Congress MP Pramod Tiwari voiced worries about the Kolkata strongroom issue, questioning the Election Commission’s operations and suggesting that such incidents could impact the democratic process. Tiwari highlighted disparities in treatment based on ruling parties, emphasizing the need for scrutiny without direct accusations.
He noted a perceived pattern where allegations against the Election Commission prompt swift clarifications from BJP representatives, raising concerns about their relationship. Tiwari mentioned that the Opposition has taken action in the Rajya Sabha against the Chief Election Commissioner, citing threats to democracy if such occurrences persist.
Tiwari reiterated the Congress’s stance on electoral transparency, advocating for fair elections and urging for transparent and impartial counting procedures. In a separate incident, the Trinamool Congress engaged in a standoff with the Election Commission in Kolkata, alleging irregularities in EVM strongrooms post the West Bengal polls.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh expressed concerns about the integrity of the electoral process, criticizing the Chief Election Commissioner’s alleged lack of neutrality. Ramesh accused the CEC of being compromised and emphasized the need to safeguard citizens’ fundamental right to vote. He affirmed ongoing efforts to address the situation through parliamentary channels.
