A Congress party meeting in Assam’s Morigaon district took a violent turn, resulting in serious injuries to a senior district-level party official. The injured leader, identified as Ejaz Hussain, the district Congress administrative general secretary, was hospitalized after the incident.
Hussain lodged a complaint with the Morigaon Sadar Police Station, accusing Mohammad Asif Nazar, the Congress MLA from Lahorighat, of being involved in the alleged assault. The clash occurred at the Morigaon school playground during preparations for a Congress joining program ahead of Gogoi’s visit.
Allegedly, tensions escalated when banners and posters of Faridul Hussain, a Congress ticket aspirant from the Lahorighat Assembly constituency, were displayed at the venue. The complaint stated that MLA Asif Nazar objected to the posters, leading to a confrontation where Hussain was reportedly assaulted by a group under the direction of a youth named Akshay Bordoloi.
The incident caused disruption at the venue, prompting organizers to temporarily halt preparations. Police confirmed the registration of a case based on the complaint and assured that an investigation is ongoing. The Congress, amidst organizational activities and induction programs in Assam ahead of the Assembly elections, faces internal discord due to the incident.
Efforts are being made by party leaders to ease tensions and maintain discipline within the organization, emphasizing the negative impact of such incidents on the party’s political image and credibility.
