Congress President and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, congratulated Harivansh on being re-elected as the Deputy Chairman of the House for a third consecutive term. Kharge expressed hope that Harivansh Singh would ensure fair treatment to the Opposition in the Upper House. He emphasized the significance of the Opposition in upholding a healthy democracy and stressed the need for Opposition members to have ample time to address their concerns.

Kharge praised Harivansh Singh for his unopposed re-election, stating that it reflects the House’s trust in his impartiality and effectiveness. He also highlighted the historic nature of this achievement, noting that Harivansh Singh is the first nominated member of the Rajya Sabha to hold the position of Deputy Chairman. Kharge extended his congratulations and best wishes to Harivansh Singh for his third term, commending his impartial and efficient performance in office.

The Congress President raised concerns about the prolonged vacancy of the Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker’s post since 2019, deeming it inconsistent with the Constitution’s principles. He urged the Union government to promptly fill such crucial constitutional roles, regardless of political considerations. Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha, J.P. Nadda, proposed Harivansh’s name for re-election, with Opposition parties abstaining from fielding a candidate and boycotting the election process.

Leaders from various political parties congratulated Harivansh on his unopposed re-election, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The position of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman became vacant after Harivansh’s term ended on April 9.
