Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge sent warm wishes to the people of Daman and Diu on their Foundation Day, emphasizing the region’s cultural diversity and its role in national unity. The Indian National Congress also expressed its greetings through its official social media platform. Kharge highlighted the rich cultural diversity and spirit of harmony in Daman and Diu that contribute to the nation’s progress and collective prosperity.
Daman and Diu, formerly a Portuguese colony on India’s western coast, became part of the Indian Union in 1961 after ‘Operation Vijay’ ended over four centuries of colonial rule. Initially administered as a Union Territory along with Dadra and Nagar Haveli, it was merged into a single Union Territory in 2020. Known for its coastal geography, historic forts, and a blend of Portuguese and Indian influences, the region’s economy thrives on tourism, fisheries, and small-scale industries.
The area’s popularity as a tourist destination has grown over the years, drawing visitors to heritage sites like Diu Fort, Naida Caves, and the Church of St. Paul. Daman, with its beaches and colonial architecture, and Diu, famous for its forts and churches, contribute significantly to India’s coastal economy and tourism sector. The region’s distinct cultural identity, shaped by maritime trade and colonial history, remains a key attraction for tourists and historians alike.
